5 Snow Globe Crafting Essentials

Before we dig into our favorite snow globe crafts for kids, it’s important to make sure you have all of the supplies you’ll need on hand. While snow globes may sound like a complex project, they are surprisingly easy to make, and you only need the following 5 items!

A JAR
If you’re making snow globes, you’ll obviously need some sort of jar. Amazon sells snow globe jars, but you can also use a mason jar or another empty jar from your recycling bin. As long as the jar has a lid that you can seal shut, it will work!

SPARKLING SNOW OR GLITTER
Another snow globe essential is…snow! Sparkling snow works best in my opinion, but glitter is a close second. You can also combine the two and experiment with different glitter colors depending on the type of snow globe you are creating!

GLYCERIN
While you don’t HAVE to add glycerin to your snow globe, it helps the snow and/or glitter fall slower and more gracefully when you shake your snow globe. You can find glycerin in most drugstores, or order it from Amazon HERE.

SMALL DECORATIVE ITEMS
In addition to snow, you’ll need some sort of decorative items to include in your snow globe. If you’re going for a Christmas theme, this set of mini figurines is a great option, but as you go through the list of snow globe crafts for kids below, you may realize that you already have options on hand that you can use.

HOT GLUE GUN OR SUPER GLUE
You will need some sort of glue to affix your figurines to the inner lid of your snow globe, and to seal the jar shut when you are finished so water doesn’t escape. I have owned this glue gun for years and have nothing but good things to say about it, but you can also use super glue if you prefer.

How to Make Snow Globes

Each of the snow globe crafts for kids below includes step-by-step tutorials on how to make each specific idea, but if you want to know how to make your own snow globes, it’s a lot easier than you may think.

1. Gather your supplies (see above).
2. Glue your decorative items to the inner lid of your jar and allow to dry.
3. Add your sparkling snow and/or glitter to your jar.
4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of glycerin.
5. Fill the jar with distilled water until it’s almost full.
6. Add glue to the inner lining of the lid to your jar, secure it in place, and allow to dry.
7. Viola! You have your very own DIY snow globe.
